India and Bangladesh to boost nuclear, space ties


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) India and Bangladesh reviewed the entire gamut of their bilateral relations at the third meeting of their Joint Consultative Commission (JCC) here on Saturday and identified several new areas of cooperation, including civil nuclear energy and space.

They also stressed the need for effective implementation of their Coordinated Border Management Plan (CBMP), including regular coordination and exchanges between nodal officers at different levels, for better border management so as to prevent cross border criminal activities, illegal movement, incidents of violence and tragic loss of lives.

The Bangladesh delegation to the meeting was led by Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali and the Indian side by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Ali appreciated the measures taken by India to bring down the number of loss of lives at the border and both sides agreed that the number should come down to zero. The two sides agreed on the need for early completion of fencing of remaining vulnerable patches along the border, a joint statement issued by the two sides after the meeting said. Both sides agreed to enhance telecommunication connectivity between the two countries.

They also agreed to enhance cooperation in new areas including nuclear science and technology, space, health, jute and textiles, renewable energy, maritime, fisheries, oceanography, meteorological, and other areas related to development of the blue economy of the region.

Briefing newspersons after the meeting, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said India would move on cooperation in nuclear energy and space as soon as it received a request from Bangladesh about specific areas.
