Kuwait make strong start at Asiad


(MENAFN- Arab Times)  KUWAIT CITY Sept 20 (Agencies): Kuwaiti national teams for volleyball handball and basketball had a powerful start at the 17th Asian Games which officially started two days ago in the city of Incheon South Korea. Kuwait's volleyball team defeated Pakistani team on Saturday with a score of 3-0 in the Group 2 matches while South Korea defeated Kazakhstan with a score of 3-0 in the Group 1 matches and India defeated Hong Kong by three sets to one in the Group 3 matches of the preliminary round. Kuwait's handball team didn't face any difficulties in its Group 2 matches as it managed to defeat Hong Kong with a score of 40-20. The first half of the match ended with Kuwait leading with 22 points to 11. Meanwhile Bahrain's handball team had a strong start as it defeated Mongolia by 57-14 while the current Asian handball champions Qatar easily won against Oman with a score of 31-19 in the Group 3 matches. In Group 4 matches the hosting country South Korea managed to defeat Japan by 31-24. In addition Kuwait's basketball team defeated Maldives with a score of 116 - 44 in Group 1 matches. The national team will today face Hong Kong and it will secure a place in the second round of the basketball tournament if it wins. In the other group matches Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had a disappointing start after it was defeated by Kazakhstan by 59 - 89 in the Group 2 match while Palestine also lost its match to India by 49-89 in the Group 3 match. Furthermore Kuwait's Olympic football team face Iraq as part of Group 4 matches where Kuwait's win by more than 2 goals is essential for the national team to qualify to the next round of the tournament in which Iraq leads with 6 points while Kuwait and Japan are tied at three points and at the bottom is Nepal. In case of a win by one goal or a draw the destiny of Kuwait's football national team in the tournament will depend on the outcome of Japan and Nepal's match. If Nepal loses it should not score more than one goal in order for Kuwait to qualify.
