S. Korean FM Likely to Meet with Japanese Counterpart

(MENAFN- QNA) South Korea's top diplomat will likely meet with his Japanese counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York this week, the latest in a series of steps that may pave the way for a potential summit between Seoul and Tokyo.

South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se said it was highly possible he could meet with his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, in New York, South Korea's (Yonhap) News Agency reported today.

Yun last held talks with Kishida on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum, an annual security meeting, in Myanmar in August.

The possible one-on-one meeting between Yun and Kishida comes days after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe proposed to hold a summit with South Korean President Park Geun-hye in the fall.

Abe conveyed his written offer to Park through former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori, who visited South Korea to attend last week's opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Incheon, a port city west of Seoul.

Park has also agreed to make joint efforts with Tokyo to set up a long-overdue summit with Abe, according to Mori.

The development comes as South Korea and Japan are seeking to repair bilateral relations soured by historical disputes stemming from Japan's 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.
