(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Secretary of State John Kerry and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met for more than an hour at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on Sunday to discuss Iran's nuclear program and the threat posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
They reviewed the status of the European Union-led negotiations between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1) on Iran's nuclear program.
They discussed "both the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done," according to a statement by the US Department of State.
Kerry noted that this week is "an opportunity to make additional progress, and stressed that it is our intention to do so," the statement said.
On the threat posed by ISIL, the two top diplomats met one-on-one first, and then were joined by Deputy Secretary of State William Burns and Under Secretary Wendy Sherman on the US side, and deputy foreign ministers Abbas Araghchi and Majid Ravanchi on the Iranian side.
"Going forward, the Secretary and Foreign Minister Zarif agreed to meet further as needed while in New York this week," the statement said.
