Oman's football team exits victories for handball, beach volleyball teams


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) It was a mixed day for Omani athletes at the 17th Asian Games in Incheon South Korea on Sunday.

While the football team bowed out after losing 0-1 to Tajikistan in the final Group C match there were victories for Oman's beach volleyball duo and its handball team in the preliminary-round matches.

At the Incheon Football Stadium Jahongir Ergashev scored the winner against Oman in the dying seconds of the game to lead Tajikistan into the knockout round along with Palestine from Group C.

Oman had lost to Palestine 0-2 in its opening match and was then held 3-3 by Singapore before Sunday's defeat to finish at the bottom of the group with just one point.

Singapore too exited despite defeating Palestine 2-1 later on Sunday. Two leftfooted free-kicks by Shahfiq Ghani in the second and 18th minutes gave Singapore an early 2-0 lead which it never relinquished despite Suad Ahmed pulling a goal back for Palestine in the 82nd minute. Singapore finished with four points while Palestine and Tajikistan advanced with six points each.

Meanwhile Oman's beach volleyball pairing of Haitham al Shereiqi and Ahmed al Hosni tasted success winning a Group F preliminary-round match against the Kuwaiti combination of Faisal al Ajmi and Jasem al Sabaghah.

The Omanis won 2-0 (21-8 21-7) at the Songdo Global University venue. In a handball preliminary Group C match Oman outplayed China 32-25 to taste its first win in the event. Oman had lost its opener 19-31 to Qatar on Saturday. On Sunday Oman led 16-14 and 16-11 in each half of the match against China. Asaad al Hasni was the hero for Oman slamming 11 goals.

He was ably supported by Hamed al Dughaishi with nine goals. Nasr al Tamtami Hassan al Jabri and Imad al Dughaishi scored four three and three goals respectively. Marwan al Dughaishi and Haitham al Balushi had a goal each to their credit.

Goalkeeper Hussain al Jabri excelled under the bar pulling off nine impressive saves. Oman next plays its last league match against UAE on Monday. Also Oman's shooters Nasser al Hattali and Saleem al Nasri and its lone swimmer Issa al Adawi failed to qualify finishing low in the qualification rounds.

Issa clocked 2m02.67s in the 200m freestyle heats which was won by Japan's Kosuke Hagino in a time of 1m48.99s.

Other results: Shooting: 10m Air Pistol (men's qualification): Nasser al Hattali finished 41st among 57 competitors scoring 95 94 95 95 93 92 for a total of 564. Trap (men's qualification Day 2): Saleem al Nasri finished 30th among 46 participants scoring 22 23 23 21 for a total of 110.
