China routs Oman in hockey

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's campaign at the 17th Asian Games began on a sour note as it suffered defeats in all the events that it took part in on the opening day in Incheon South Korea

The national hockey team playing its opening Pool B game was handed a 0-5 drubbing by China.  The Chinese scored twice in the first half and then slammed three past the Omani defence after the break.

Ao Yang scored a brace (15th 40th minutes) while Sun Tianjun (29th) Du Chen (42nd) and Zhang Zhixuan (46th) also scored. Oman will next take on heavyweight India on Tuesday.

On the tennis court Oman's No 1 player Fatma al Nabhani got off  to a disappointing start as the sultanate side was routed 0-3 by India in the opening round of the women's team event.

India's Prarthana Thombare and Ankita Raina notched up contrasting victories before the pairing of Natasha Palha and Rishika Sunkara was handed a walkover in the doubles match as India booked a spot in the quarterfinals. Thombare started the tie for India against Oman dropping only one game to hammer Sarah al Balushi 6-0 6-1 in a match that lasted just 52 minutes.

Ankita however had to work hard for her win over Fatma. The Omani player fought back after losing the opening set but failed to carry her good form into the decider as Ankita eventually pulled off a 6-4 2-6 6-3 win in nearly two hours. Meanwhile Saudi Arabia trounced Oman 3-0 in the men's team first round.

Saudi's Omar Ahmed beat Oman's Omran al Balushi 6-2 6-1 and then Ammar al Haqbani outplayed Younis Rawahi 6-1  6-0 to make it 2-0. Musaeed al Azzam and Faisal al Rebdi then struggled to get past the duo of Omran and Younis 7-5 7-5 in the doubles contest.
