Kuwait sets up team to monitor IS sympathisers


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Kuwait has set up a crack team of 80 public security officials to comb the country and make sure no Islamic State (IS) operatives are active there nor are there any sympathisers of the militant outfit.

The officials, from the law-enforcement agencies, including the Criminal Investigation Department, have been group into 40 patrol teams, each consisting of two officials.

According to the Kuwait-based news website alanbar.com (alanbar in Arabic means news), the team has close coordination with state public security agencies and will work in different parts of the country.

The order to form the team was issued by the Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Mohamed Khalid, alanbar.com said.

Members of the team have been asked to keep track of some 60 suspected IS sympathisers, 22 of whom are based in Al Ahmediya province while 16 are in Al Farwania province.

Meanwhile, Kuwait's central bank has asked banks and exchange houses in the country to closely monitor their transactions and keep an eye on huge remittances. The Department of Customs has also been put on alert and asked to be vigilant.
