Polls close in Scotland independence referendum

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The polls have closed and counting is under way in the referendum to decide whether Scotland should stay as part of the UK or become an independent country.
Counting will be carried out through the night, with individual results announced for each of Scotland's 32 local authority areas.
The final national result is expected after 06:30 BST (05:30 GMT) tomorrow.

A YouGov on-the-day poll published shortly after polls closed suggested "No" was on 54 percent and "Yes" on 46 percent.
A "Yes" vote in the ballot would end the 307-year-old union between Scotland and the rest of the UK.

A record turnout is anticipated, with 4,283,392 people - 97 percent of the electorate - having registered to vote.

As soon as Scotland's 2,608 polling places closed, work began to transport hundreds of ballot boxes to counting centres in each of Scotland's 32 local authorities.

After some two-and-a-half years of campaigning, people across Scotland have finally had their say. The result is expected to go down to the wire, with polls in the last two weeks of the campaign suggesting the result is too close to call, the commentators said. Voting opened at 7am and ended at 10pm, with the turnout expected to be one of the highest on record, they said.
