S. Korea's Military Defense Budget to Rise 5.22 Next Year


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Seoul September 18 (QNA) - The South Korean government has set next year's defense budget at 37.56 trillion won an increase of 5.2% from this year. The South Korean Ministry of National Defense said Thursday that it increased the operational budget related to the welfare of the soldiers and the safety-related budget by 4.8% following a string of accidents in military barracks according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website. The ministry said the increased amount will be used to scrap old facilities that pose threats to the safety of military personnel quicken response to accidents in the barracks and raise the wages of soldiers. The budget for enhancing defense power has also risen 6.2% from this year. In particular the budget to strengthen defense posture against North Korea's missile and nuclear threat such as the Kill Chain system and a Korean style anti-missile defense system has grown 22.9%. Once the military budget plan is endorsed at a Cabinet meeting on Thursday it will be submitted to the National Assembly next Tuesday. (QNA)
