Kuwait thrash Nepal Iraq triumph


(MENAFN- Arab Times)  INCHEON South Korea Sept 17 (Agencies): Kuwait's national football team regained hope to qualify in the second stage after defeating Nepal U23 by five goals to nothing in the second round of the fourth group competition in the 17th Asian Games which is currently taking place in the city of Incheon South Korea. Kuwait started the tournament with a bitter defeat against Japan in their first match by one goal against four; thus the win against Nepal was vital for the national team to qualify to the next leg of the tournament. Kuwait's first goal was scored in the 18th minute by Fahad Al-Hamdan and the in the second half a hat trick came from Sami Al-Sanee at the (65th 73rd and 87th minute) while Faisal Ojob Al-Azmi scored at the 83rd minute of the match. Meanwhile in the same group Iraq football national team achieved a great and important win against the title holders of the tournament Japan by three goals to one; a win that puts Iraq at the top of the table with six points and in the verge of entering the second leg of the tournament after it won its first match against Nepal U23 four goals to zero. The last time Iraq played Japan in the tournament was in the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games where the match ended in favor of Iraq with one goal against zero for Japan. Thailand's women footballers bounced back from a big defeat at the Asian Games by running up a huge 10-0 scoreline against the Maldives on Wednesday. Pitsamai Sornsai bagged four including two towering headers that exposed the Maldivians' aerial vulnerability while her strike partner Nisa Romyen also notched a hat-trick. The monster scoreline will be a welcome boost for the Thais after their 5-0 opening-day thrashing by South Korea for which they nevertheless earned a $3000 bonus from the Thai FA. The few fans scattered around the Namdong Asiad Rugby Field watched a completely one-sided affair with Thailand hitting 36 shots 22 on target against zero shots for the Maldives. Thailand totted up 11 corners against just one for the Maldives and enjoyed 76 percent of possession. It was the second gaping scoreline conceded by the Maldives within a matter of days after they went down 15-0 to India in their opening group game on Sunday.
