Belgium targets boosting int'l tourist arrivals

(MENAFN) Belgium announced strategic plans to win over more international tourists and compete with its European neighbors on equal terms, Gulf News reported.

"Outside of Europe, we work a lot in the Middle East. Russia, East Asia and Latin America are also on the list," sales manager at VisitBrussels, a tourism development office, said.

Last year, the country's top visitors were coming from America, with 329,910 visitors. Meanwhile, the number of Arab tourists reached only 61,530, official figures showed.

During 2013, a total of 14.2 million visitors visited Belgium. Of the total, 6.3 million also visited Brussels. Tourism in Brussels amounted to 9.3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2012.
