(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The urgent need for international efforts in attaining stability and tacking the conflict in Libya amid fears of dangerous repercussions was stressed by attendees at a conference discussing the matter here on Wednesday.
The call came in a joint press conference by Libyan Foreign Minister Mohamed Abdel Aziz and his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo at the conclusion of the gathering of representatives of 21 nations and organisations.
The two ministers expressed deep anxiety over the effects of the humanitarian crisis brought about as a result of the circumstances in Libya, including the forced displacement of thousands, accounts of human trafficking and human rights breaches and the lack of security.
Attendees had condemned any forms of foreign intervention, affirming that the North African nation's conundrum should not be resolved through military means, they said.
Commitment to the stability of Libya and the unity and sovereignty of its lands and full backing of the current parliament, as a legitimate representative of the Libyan people, was stressed by the talks.
The parliament bears the responsibility for uniting the people and launching an urgent dialogue process aimed at reaching consensus amongst factions for the future of the country, the ministers pointed out.
Spanish minister Garcia-Margallo underlined the need for the Libyan issue to remain a priority on the international agenda, adding his views that any solution should stem from the Libyans themselves.
Any international backing, he stressed, should be limited to support of these efforts, coordination and initiatives aimed at empowering the Libyans to be masters of their own destiny and future.
Alongside the host and targeted nations, European attendees included France and Italy, Arab North African regional powerhouse, Egypt, and representatives of the UN, Arab League, African Union and European Union.
