Over 10,000 Syrians fled to Yemen in 3 years - UNHCR


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Sub-Office in Aden, southwest Yemen, announced Wednesday that more than 10,000 Syrian refugees sought shelter in Yemen in the past three years due to ongoing crisis in Syria.

UNHCR has issued, in coordination with Yemeni General Department for Immigration and Passports, temporary protection certificates for Syrian refugees residing in governorates of Aden, Lahij, Abyan, Ad Dali'a, Shabwah, Hadramaut, Al-Mahrah and Soqatra, director of protection at UNHCR Sub-Office said in a press statement.

This project is pursuant to the agreement between UNHCR and General Department for Immigration and Passports in Sanaa, which provides for issuing such certificates valid for only one year, for all Syrian refugees in Yemen, UNHCR official said.

He added that the certificates grant the Syrian refugees legal residency in Yemen and access to UNHCR' aid and services.
