Russia Looks to Enhance Relations with African Union

(MENAFN- QNA) Russia is looking to enhance ties with the African Union (AU) to foster the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Africa and elsewhere, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday after meeting AU representatives in Addis Ababa.

"We are confident Africans can bring solutions to the conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali and the Central African Republic," Lavrov said, adding this could improve the climate for resolving other conflicts, including the one between Russia and Ukraine.

AU chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma said she saw no problem in strengthening ties with Russia at a time when the European Union is tightening sanctions against Moscow over its involvement in Ukraine.

"We do not see threats to cooperation with respect to the EU. We do not see ourselves being put in a difficult position," Dlamini-Zuma said.
