Zimbabwe, Russia invest USD4.8b in platinum mine


(MENAFN) A platinum mine joint venture between Zimbabwe and Russia was launched, which will start platinum production in 2017, with investment of USD4.8 billion, Xinhua reported.

The 6,500-hectare Darwendale platinum mine is set to become Zimbabwe's biggest platinum mine when partial development is reached in 2021 with projected annual production of 530,000 ounces.

Zimbabwe, which holds the second largest platinum reserves in the world after South Africa, is currently producing 430,000 ounces of platinum annually from three mines which are Zimplats and Unki.
