Kerry to rally support for Iraq at UN

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US Secretary of State John Kerry will be in New York on September 19 "to chair a ministerial debate of the United Nations Security Council on Iraq as part of the US presidency of the council for the month," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf announced on Monday.

Kerry "will convene the council to demonstrate broad and unified international support for the new Iraqi government and emphasize the need for broad political inclusivity as the new government pursues its agenda on behalf of the Iraqi people," she added.

The discussion "will also provide a platform for the international community to underscore its support for Iraq's new government as it fights against ISIL and responds to the ongoing humanitarian crisis that ISIL is spreading," said Harf. "(It) will highlight support for Iraq's further reintegration into the region and the international community." Kerry is currently in Paris, where he is participating in the International Conference on Peace and Security in Iraq.
