S. Korea's National Security Adviser Leaves for US

(MENAFN- QNA) South Korea's national security adviser left Sunday for the United States, saying a wide range of issues, including North Korea, will be discussed during his four-day trip.

Kim Kwan-jin plans to meet with his American counterpart, Susan Rice, and other senior US officials in Washington, according to South Korea's (Yonhap) News Agency.

It is his first trip to the US since taking office in June.

His visit comes as North Korea takes aggressive diplomatic steps to come out of isolation.

Its longtime diplomatic heavyweight Kang Sok-ju is on a four-nation trip to Europe, and Foreign Minister Ri Su-yong plans to attend the annual UN General Assembly in New York later this month.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se are also scheduled to participate in the session.

Park is widely expected to raise the North Korean human rights problem in her formal debut on the UN stage.

Meanwhile, Kim and Rice will also likely discuss Seoul's plans regarding Washington's fight against the Islamic State, a Sunni extremist group.

There will be "close consultations" as well over the issue of the three American citizens detained in North Korea, he added.
