Qatar preparing for WMSC meeting in December

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar is busy preparing for the year's final World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) meeting that will attract more than 2000 guests from the world of motor sport in December, QMMF President Nasser bin Khalifa Al Al Attiyah said yesterday.

Al Attiyah, who is also a Vice President at FIA and FIM, said he has met top FIA officials here in Beijing where policy makers have finalised race calenders for F1, WRC and Cross-Country events next year.

"We are in Beijing right now. The meetings that we planned before leaving Doha have been completed. We had a number of negotiations to take care of. We have done that as well," Al Attiyah said yesterday.

"There were a number of proposals on the table and I was part of the discussions that took place (yesterday)," the Qatari added.

"One of our primary objectives on this trip to Beijing is to look into matters relating to the WMSC General Assembly meeting we have in Doha in December this year. It will be huge on so many accounts. We are expecting more than 2000 guests from 150 countries," Al Attiyah said.

"We will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of FIM during our the General Assembly meeting.

"The world's top riders and drivers representing the entire FIA and FIM families will be in Doha," he said.

The Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) was founded on December 21, 1904, in the rooms of the restaurant Ledoyen in Paris, under the name of Federation Internationale des Clubs Motocyclistes.

The Motocycle-Club de France organised a race called the International Cup in Dourdan, to the south-west of Paris, on September 25, 1904 with the participation of Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, and Great Britain.

The race was won by France, but it became apparent that a sporting authority was needed to settle potential disputes arising out of international events.

As a result, the sports clubs of the five countries put forward the idea of creating the Federation Internationale des Clubs Motocyclistes (FICM).

"We have also finalised the race calendars for the next year. The final dates for MotoGP championship are under discussion. We will know more about the actual dates in October. Discussions about WRC calendar and Cross-Country races have also taken place in Beijing," Al Attiyah pointed out.

WMSC has responsibility for all aspects of international motor sport. It meets at least four times a year to decide on rules, regulations, safety and development of motor sport at every level from karting to Formula One, Al Attiyah said.

The WMSC is made up of the FIA President, the Deputy President for Sport, 7 Vice-Presidents, 14 titular members and 4 members by right.

All, with the exception of the FIA President and members by right, must represent a National Sporting Authority (ASN) with at least one event entered on the International Sporting Calendar, and be of different nationalities.

The members by right are the President of the International Karting Commission (CIK), the Representative of the Promoter of the F1 World Championship and the President of the FIA Manufacturers' Commission.

The WMSC, in its administration of international motor sport, prioritises improvements in safety and environmental standards across all forms of the sport, adopts common regulations across the various series, and nurtures motor sport's roots by developing all forms of the sport, especially among the young and in developing countries.

"From here I will be on my way to Rome where I will be a guest of Wolfgang SRB who was elected European FIM President a few months ago. He is a friend and we will have meetings to discuss our sport and ways to promote bike racing in Europe and Asia," Al Attiyah said.

The QMMF President is scheduled to be present at the San Marino MotoGP race tomorrow in Italy where he will be following the fortunes of QMMF Racing Team riders Anthony West and team-mate Roman Ramos of Spain.
