EU Sanctions Target Russian Energy Defence Firms


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Brussels September 12 (QNA) - The European Union imposed sanctions Friday against large Russian energy and defence companies including a subsidiary of Gazprom and the manufacturer of Kalashnikov rifles. The latest measures which also target senior separatist figures in eastern Ukraine came into effect after being published in the EU's Official Journal. They hinder access to EU financial markets for energy companies Rosneft Transneft and Gazprom Neft as well as defence manufacturers Opk Oboronprom Uralvagonzavod and United Aircraft Corporation German Press Agency dpa reported. EU President Herman Van Rompuy said Thursday that the bloc will review developments in eastern Ukraine over the coming weeks and could reverse or adjust the sanctions "if the situation on the ground so warrants." The measures were formally agreed on Monday but their implementation was delayed amid concerns from EU member states that they could hamper the fragile ceasefire in eastern Ukraine as well as fears over Russian retaliation.(QNA)
