Korea's Jobless Rate Drops to 3.3 Percent in August

(MENAFN- QNA) South Korea's jobless rate inched down in August from a month earlier and job creation accelerated thanks to more employment in the manufacturing, retail and service sectors, a government report showed Friday.

According to the report by Statistics Korea, carried by South Korean News Agency (Yonhap), the jobless rate stood at 3.3 percent last month, down from 3.4 percent a month earlier. The seasonally adjusted jobless rate, however, rose to 3.5 percent from the previous month's 3.4 percent.

The number of employed people in August came to 25.89 million, up 594,000 from a year earlier. This is larger than the previous month's 505,000 and marked the second straight month that the on-year job creation has been above 500,000.

"The manufacturing sector seems to be leading the overall job creation, with the wholesale and retail area also rebounding from the downturns in May and June," said Sim Won-bo, head of the agency's employment statistics division.

Manufacturers added 219,000 jobs in August, the largest on-year rise in employment since January 2011, the report showed. The wholesale and retail sector gained 160,000 more jobs over the same cited period.
