Onam eating competition claims one life in Kerala


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Kandamuthan who was one among the 15 participants in the competition held at Chittoor in Palghat got suffocated as he ate the third idli.Trivandrum — An eating competition held as part of the Onam celebrations in Kerala on Monday ended on a tragic note with a 55-year-old contender for the title dying as an idli got stuck in his throat.

Kandamuthan who was one among the 15 participants in the competition held at Chittoor in Palghat got suffocated as he ate the third idli said police. The rules of the competition stated that the person eating the maximum number of idlis in a fixed time without drinking water would be getting the prize.

Fifty-two-year-old Kandamuthan son of Chellan from Nellukuthupura near Chittoor ate two idlis without any problem. While eating the third one it got stuck in his throat and he suffocated. He was rushed to the Palghat district hospital where he was declared dead.

The body was handed over to the relatives after postmortem at the district hospital. Kandamuthan is survived by his wife Usha and daughters Nisha and Asha.

The idli eating competition was organised by the Yuvathara Arts and Sports Committee of Polpully on the occasion of the harvest festival of Onam. The competition was watched by around 200 people.

Food eating competition is one of several competitions organized during Onam which commemorates an era of prosperity peace and happiness. Boat races and pookalam (flower carpet) competitions and uriyady are the other major competitive events.
