S. Korea, US Urge N. Korea to Take Positive Steps in Nuclear Program

(MENAFN- QNA) Seoul and Washington have officially asked Pyongyang to take steps moving forward to improve inter-Korean relations.

Hwang Joon-kook, Seoul's top nuclear envoy, met reporters Tuesday after a meeting with his US counterpart, Glyn Davies, in Washington D.C.

Hwang said that he and Davies agreed during the meeting that in order for North Korea to get out of its diplomatic isolation, the regime should take steps to denuclearize itself, according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website.

The South Korean nuclear envoy added that North Korea must also take a forward-looking stance toward the relations with the South. Hwang said that Seoul and Washington urged the North, in particular, to take positive steps on humanitarian issues, such as reunions for the families separated by the Korean War and the release of three American citizens detained in the North.

Hwang, the special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, left for the US on a hastily arranged trip on Monday.
