US delegation to visit Russia for talks on INF accord

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A US delegation led by Undersecretary Rose Goettemoeller will meet with Russian officials in Moscow on Thursday to discuss the future of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty.

"We first requested these talks in July when we announced our determination that Russia was in violation of the INF treaty," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Marie Harf told reporters on Tuesday. "We will make every effort to resolve concerns we have about Russian compliance and to ensure the continued viability of the treaty," she said.

"Of course, the goal is for Russia to return to compliance with its obligations under the INF treaty," Harf added.

The treaty, inked in 1987 near the end of the Cold War, eliminated nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with a range of 500-5,500 km.
