Afghan Presidential Candidate Abdullah Rejects Disputed Vote

(MENAFN- QNA) Afghan presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah has rejected the election audit results, describing it as rigged and saying that the process of forming a unity government has reached an impasse.

Abdullah said the vote audit process was marred by disagreements. "We won't accept a fraudulent government for a single day," Abdullah told a press conference, adding: "We will defend every clean vote again and again." While Abdullah called for forming a unity government as a necessary step, he said the political process has reached an impasse because of disagreements over the allocation of government positions and the division of powers.

The election's runoff round, which was held on June 14, turned into a political crisis when Abdullah rejected the preliminary results that showed his rival Ashraf Ghani in the lead.

Both candidates had agreed earlier to form a national unity government after long discussions which U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry held with Abdullah and Ghani during two visits to Kabul.
