Qatar Calls for Activation of U.N. Mechanisms to Protect Civilians

(MENAFN- QNA) The State of Qatar has called for activating U.N. mechanisms for protecting civilians and setting restrictions against evading punishment as well as continuing discussions at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on a new legal framework.

Yousuf Sultan Laram, Qatar's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, made the remarks as he addressed the unofficial interactive dialogue of the UNGA on international assistance and protection of civilians.

He said that almost ten years have passed since the adoption of the final declaration of the 2005 summit, according to which member states reiterated their commitment to the protection of civilians and building societies that are not exposed to crimes of mass atrocities.

Laram added that Qatar, which is used to contributing to international efforts to protect civilians; supporting the rule of law; and resorting to peaceful resolution of conflicts, believes that the alarming humanitarian conditions in the world now and the increasing need for protecting civilians from the horrible violations committed against them requires the activation of existing legal mechanisms on the protection of civilians along with the ongoing discussion on developing the definition of responsibility for protection.

As for developmental assistance, Laram said, Qatar has offered development support to several countries in order to establish their national institutions, which helps in building domestic environment that enhances equality and social justice.
