(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani yesterday chaired a meeting of the ministerial committee tasked with deciding on the statute and regulations for Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Award for Arab Security.

The meeting at St. Regis Doha Hotel was attended by several Arab interior ministers.

In his opening address, the Prime Minister conveyed greetings of the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and his best wishes of success to the meeting.

He said, "The meeting to decide the statute and regulations for the award stemmed from the unanimous decision of the Arab interior ministers at their 13th session in Riyadh on March 13, 2013 to establish an award in the name of the late Prince Nayef in honour of his pioneering role and his honorary presidency of the council for nearly three decades."

He highlighted Prince Nayef's good reputation and history, achievements in the service of Arab and Islamic nations, support for their causes in various fields, including security, role in the development of joint Arab action since his inauguration as honorary chairman of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers in 1982, and his efforts to develop the capacity of Arab security personnel through his presidency of the Governing Council of Naif Arab University for Security Sciences.

We have been keen to host the ministerial committee tasked with deciding the system and regulations for the award set up upon a decision of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers at its 31st session in Marrakesh, Morocco, on March 12 this year in recognition of his role, the Premiere said.

The Premier said the award carries the message of encouraging communication between Arab security apparatuses and citizens in line with ethical and professional standards. It also boosts cooperation between citizens and security bodies and reiterates the citizen's commitment to implementation of regulations and rules.

He said the objectives of the award highlight the goal of enhancing popular participation in achieving security in Arab societies and encouraging partnership between security entities and society to develop security and cooperation.

He said the award's categories will help encourage participants - individuals, entities, research centres and organisations - to contribute to finding the appropriate solutions to tackle emerging criminal practices that threaten Arab countries and the world, particularly those related to counter-terrorism, drugs, money laundering, human trafficking, illegal immigration and smuggling. He also hosted a luncheon banquet in honour of the participating delegations.
