Food Fight to Raise Funds for World Hunger

(MENAFNEditorial)

Taylor MI - Food Fight a start-up non-profit organization is raising funds and awareness to battle world hunger. The organization’s founder Garrett Thierry has launched an on-line virtual food fight to spread the word about the real event scheduled in May 2015. The company’s initiative is looking to go down in history as the world’s largest food fight event in recorded history with all profits going to Action Against Hunger Feeding America and Gleaners Food Bank of Detroit.

Thierry realizes he literally has to raise an army to make the event successful. His team has already generated over 500 individuals and businesses committed to the cause before the actual launch. Volunteers donors and participants are all needed. To get things off the ground the Food Fight team will be flinging potato salad whip cream pies and jello via Facebook.

“We need to make this event go viral. Using a virtual food fight is a really fun way to make that happen.”

The notion of a food fight to feed the hungry seems conflicting. However according to the World Health Organization approximately two billion tons of food are discarded every year and accounts for eight percent of land fill waste. With this in mind Thierry plans to use food meant for discarding as artillery. He will sell the artillery to Food Fight participants and donate the proceeds to charity. Thierry spent time speaking with local restaurants and grocers to get an understanding of the waste problem.

According to Thierry “The restaurant/food industry has their hands tied with regard to what gets wasted. They have to throw away food before it has a risk of going bad. So essentially they are throwing away good food. The managers we’ve spoken with love the idea of Food Fight and are lining up to contribute to the cause.”

Thierry realized the image of a record
eaking food fight couldn’t be conducted out in the urban streets. He and his team devised a way to make better use of wasted food.

“We are going to have the food fight on farm lands” Thierry said. “Afterward we will have combines till the food into the land as compost.”

A major crisis the agricultural industry is facing is the deterioration of nutrient-rich top-soil. Thierry envisions taking food waste and re-purposing it to improve land quality for agriculture while reducing land fill waste at the same time.

The response of Food Fight has encompassed a variety of demographics. Theirry was shocked by the outpouring of support.

“Age…culture it doesn’t matter. We’ve seen everything from teenage boys to elderly women get really excited about this. I guess everyone loves the idea of a food fight. Especially when it’s for such a great cause” said Thierry.
