Randy Jernigan Determined to Break the Mold

Can a freelance writer be typecast? Author Randy Jernigan believes so.

New York NY USA (September 8 2014) — For the past twenty two years freelancer Randy Jernigan has written edgy celebrity pieces for such magazines as Globe The Star Life and Style Weekly and the list goes on and on. But now he’s out to make a few changes in his career direction.

“Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to come across as an ingrate here. I owe a great deal to this industry and all the wonderful editors that gave me a chance to prove my abilities and who published my work. My freelancing was my bread and butter and I’ll always have a great amount of appreciation for it-but it’s time for a change.”

It was recently reported in The Daily Wrap that Randy has sold a short story to an L. A. film group and will be writing the screenplay for the film. It was also reported by the same online news site that the lead character in the story was written specifically for actor Daniel Radcliffe and that the studio will be making Radcliffe an offer.

“It’s important for writer as well as other creative folks that make a living with their craft to shake things up a bit-and sometimes that means breaking out of the mold we’ve cast for ourselves. I feel that I’ve gone as far as I can go as a ‘celebrity reporter’ and I need to expand and move into other genres of writing. So when my agent came to me with the idea of moving toward screenplay writing I jumped at it. I have written two before for a cable network and have always wanted to develop that genre so I was thrilled when this film company came along and bought up Losing to Win!

According to a recently published report from BriefingWire the story published in a national woman’s magazine in 2007 Willing to Love “explores the fictional character of Nicholas Carr and the emotional burden placed on the young man who returns home after 10 years to face his youthful mistakes and make amends with his dying father.”

“There’s a lot of me in this story and that’s the way a lot of writers do it-you borrow from what you know when writing fiction. So I think that my close friends will recognize a lot of me in the character of Nick. At least I hope they do. That means I’ve done my job right.”

Screenplay aside that doesn’t mean that Randy will never write celebrity material again. In fact his new book series Stars That Make A Difference will become available soon from his publishing house and includes four biographical sketches of celebrities he admires. Daniel Radcliffe Ellen Degeneres Marie Osmond and Taylor Swift.

“This work is a lot different that what I would have written for a magazine. Each sketch is a serious look and the star their career a bit about their personal life and a lot about how they’ve given back to their respective communities. I’m very proud of this book series.” said Randy.

So when several gossip rags began slamming his book project and calling his credibility into question (one tabloid actually threatened to post a private photo taken at Sundance of him and a celebrity friend

he was writing about) that’s when Randy knew that it was time to take some action. After consulting with his legal team Randy decided to file legal complaints against two of the online tabloids.

“That period of time was rough for me” says the author. “I’d wake up in the morning and read all this crap written about my book online about the celebrity I was writing about and sometimes about me too. Calling me and my work into question and I’d want to just flip out on the person writing it. I tend to be a very private person when it comes to certain aspects of my life and I wanted to give that same consideration to the celebrity I’m writing these sketches about. So all this really stressed me out. I began having horrible headaches and needed to be mediated for anxiety at times.”

It was a face-time message from a very insightful celebrity friend whom Randy had been interviewing for this book series that helped put his mind at ease and put the whole situation into proper perspective.

“My stress was coming from what these rags were saying about the folks I was writing about-they just didn’t deserve that and it bothered me greatly.”

But Randy’s rough patch is over now and he’ll be moving forward with the screenplay and doing a promotional junket for the “Stars” book beginning September 14th through the 22 as well as a couple of book signings and a book expo.

Stars That Make A Difference is expected to hit the market place in about six weeks so be watching for it as well as other books and writing projects coming from the author.
