Qatar- Deals for humanitarian projects in Somalia, Sudan


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Two agreements worth more than QR3.26m have been signed by Qatar charities to fund humanitarian projects in the war-torn Somalia and Sudan. The first was signed by Qatar Charity (QC) and Qatar Red Crescent (QRC) which will see them funding a health centre in Somalia to meet the needs of the local population.

The agreement was signed by Yousef bin Ahmed Al Kuwari, CEO, QC, and Saleh bin Ali Al Mohannadi, Secretary-General, QRC, at the QC headquarters in Doha. The centre will be built by QC in Odjla village in the province of Lower Shabelle.

The agreement stipulates that QRC will fund the running of the centre at a cost of about QR260,000 in the first year, with QRC working in cooperation with QC to secure funding for the centre in the coming years.

In case of non-availability of funding, the centre will be handed over to any competent organisation to run it.

QRC will manage, monitor and follow up on the centre's activities and provide medicines through its representative in Somalia in collaboration with partners to achieve the objectives of the agreement.

It will also select and supervise staff in cooperation with official bodies and the QC Office, if necessary.

QC will cooperate with residents of the region to facilitate the management of the centre and the formation of committees in coordination with QRC, and cooperate with QRC in the selection and training of personnel.

Meanwhile, QC, QRC and Organisation of Islamic Dawa have signed a tripartite agreement to build a water station in Sudan, at a cost of about QR3m.

It was signed by Al Kuwari, Al Mohannadi and the Director-General of the Organisation, Hammad Abdul Qadir, at the QC headquarters in Doha.

The deal is within the framework of the keenness of the three parties to solve the problems of drinking water in the targeted areas of Sudan, and invest their expertise.

They funded a project to provide villages of Inqad unit in River Nile State, Sudan, to provide drinking water at a cost of QR2.876m, with each party providing QR960,000 and QC carrying out implementation, providing services to those affected according to specifications set out in the project document.
