Find your beach body

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Hit the waves and explore all the great ways how surfing can improve your health It might be easier finding a needle in a haystack than a surfer who’s out of shape - that’s because conquering the waves comes with a host of aesthetic benefits that will keep you beach body ready all year round.

Surfers are the ultimate form of athletes because they barely ever step foot in the gym yet maintain enviable physiques that suggest otherwise. Their sport encourages a lean torso strong arms and legs and very low body fat percentage. While surfing may look easy it takes a tremendous amount of energy and strength to actually pull it off.

The first time I ever stood upright on a board (after falling on my face for many weeks) was a great accomplishment that I’ll never forget but getting there felt like going through an insane boot camp that happened to offer impeccable views of the ocean. I was working muscles that I didn’t yet know existed and was feeling sore across every inch of my body but it ended up putting me in the best shape of my life.

Like most beginners I made the unfortunate mistake of overestimating my physical condition. Paddling in a pool will not prepare you for the power involved in fighting against the waves and currents so I ended up spending a lot of time coasting along flatly on my board to build up power for my upper body. The other point I failed to take note of was how incredibly exhausting surfing can be and I was often left breathless after just a few minutes out.

But the mental pressure that comes with being out in open water does a remarkable thing to your adrenaline pushing you harder into the many multi-dimensional movement patterns it takes to successfully ride a wave. From a muscular and aerobic level the stress your body is put under makes for the ultimate fitness session.

But harnessing the power of a surfer’s workout doesn’t necessarily mean you have to actually get on a board and hit the waters. By mimicking the strenuous movements involved in surfing from the comfort of dry land you’re getting the same benefits that you would with a board under your feet. We’re talking squats arm rotations burpees and loads of core training. Add some intensive laps in the pool and you’re a few steps closer to hitting the waves.

Dubai may not be a surfer’s paradise but its calm waters are ideal for beginners. For anyone looking to get in shape without having to hit the gym for a conventional workout surfing provides one of the best ways to tone up under the sun.
