Quake Shakes Iran's Central Northern City


(MENAFN- QNA) An earthquake measuring 4.9 degrees on Richter scale hit Iran on Sunday.

The earthquake jolted the Mojen region in of Semnan prince in the central part of Iran Sunday. A report by Seismological center affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University said the tremor occurred early Sunday morning and its epicenter was registered at 36.67 degrees in latitude and 54.70 degrees in longitude, according to Iran's (IRNA) News Agency.

There was no immediate report on possible casualties or damage caused by the quake.

Iran is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating. The worst in recent times hit Bam in Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people and destroyed the city's ancient mud-built citadel.
