Iraqi Kurdistan welcomes int'l coalition against ISIL


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani has welcomed he formation of an international coalition to counter the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), led by the US, including some NATO members.

Barzani made the statement during a joint press conference with the Canadian Ambassador to Iraq Bruno Sakomana, on Saturday, hoping the step would prove fruitful on the ground as soon as possible.

In his talks with Sakomana, Barzani appreciated the ambassador's visit and expressed gratitude to Canada for the country' support to the region in the war against terrorism, the Kurdistan Regional Government said in a statement.

Canada provided aid to face the humanitarian crisis in the region resulting from the displacement of huge numbers of people who fled their homes fearing the ISIL attacks, it added.

For his part, Sakomana paid tribute to the Kurdish Peshmerga troops for repelling the ISIL terrorists, especially over the past few days, making noticeable advance.

Barzani said he was proud of the Peshmerga, urging the international community to offer them all forms of support and aid so that they could repulse the terrorists.

The Peshmerga managed over the past couple of days to seize control of strategic sites near Mosul, and sources said that up to 40 ISIL militants were killed in the fighting.
