Qatar's role in solving crises highlighted

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar's Attorney General Dr Ali bin Fetais Marri took part in the opening session of the 'Conference on Global issues and their impact on the future of human rights and international criminal justice', at the International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (ISISC) in Siracusa, Italy.

The meeting of experts in international criminal law from all over the world was held within the framework of a research project led by ISISC to assess the future of human rights and international criminal justice in the light of a number of issues facing the world, with regard to security, poverty, population growth, the economy and the environment.

Prince Al Hassan bin Talal, Chairman of Arab Thought Forum in Jordan, Bahrain's Justice Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, former Slovenian president Danilo Turk and the United Nations High Representative for the Dialogue of Civilizations, Nassir bin Abdulaziz Al Nasr, also took part in the opening session.

In his speech, Dr Al Marri noted that hunger, poverty, population growth, arms trafficking, drugs and terrorism, ethnic and religious conflicts were the biggest problems afflicting the world.

He stressed that inability of states to face these problems would lead to more poverty, famines and suffering, and there will be more collapsed and failed states and they will not be confined to Africa and parts of Asia.

Dr Al Marri pointed out that instead of searching for solutions to these problems, some countries were imposing restrictions on freedoms to stop their people protesting.

He stressed that Qatar had been engaging in constructive initiatives at all levels and was contributing to solving these problems through its donor institutions. He referred to the strength of the international commitment to assist states in crisis, and wondered whether there was a need for a new world order before the existing system led to more human tragedies.
