(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The United Nations Development Program's (UNDP) office in Kuwait marked on Wednesday the World Humanitarian Day which is a day dedicated to recognize humanitarian personnel and those who have lost their lives working for humanitarian causes.
In a speech given at a ceremony held by the UNDP office here, Dr. Abdullah Al Matouq, UN Secretary-General's Humanitarian Envoy for Kuwait, said that there are approximately 108 million people worldwide who are currently in dire need for relief aid, noting that there are some 9.5 million Syrians who are displaced within and outside of Syria and are in need of humanitarian assistance.
He stressed that Kuwait gives humanitarian endeavors great importance and is in contact with international relief agencies to whisk relief aid to those who require it in as speedy a manner as possible.
He indicated his delight that the UN is going to honor His Highness the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah by conferring the title of Leader of World Humanity on him.
Echoing Dr.Matouq's sentiments was United Nations Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the UNDP in Kuwait Mubashar Riaz Sheikh who said in a speech at the ceremony that Kuwait's history with humanitarian work goes back to 1913 when the first charitable organization was established in the country. He touted Kuwait's long history in offering relief aid to numerous people worldwide, noting that human catastrophes are taking place currently in Iraq, Syria, South Sudan in addition to Yemen, Palestine, and Myanmar.
