US leads UN Security Council this month


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Chairing the UN Security Council for September, US Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power on Wednesday briefed the press on her program of work.

The Security Council will be covering several issues of interest with the hearing of different briefings from senior officials, in addition to the Secretary General's annual report which lists eight countries for grave violations against children in situations of armed conflicts in 51 non state actors, she said.

Boko Haram has been listed for the first time, Power noted.

The US official added that the Council will hold sessions on UN missions in Libya and Liberia, Libya and Iran, as well as the Middle East and United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF).

The implementation of resolution 2118 on the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons program will be addressed in a briefed by UN special coordinator at Crisis Operations Group (COG).

In addition , UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos will also brief on humanitarian situation in Syria.

UNSMIL and UNAMA will be part of the Council's issues to be discussed, as well as a scheduled renewal of the UNMIL mandate.

In regards to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Power said ISIL has enjoyed a safe haven in Syria that has allowed it to amass the kind of weaponry and resources that it then was able to bring back to Iraq.

She reiterated condemnation of violent extremism and supported US President Barack Obama's approach in strengthening the moderate opposition and supporting their references.
