Germany calls for a "real ceasefire" in Ukraine

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on Russia and Ukraine to faithfully commit themselves to a ceasefire in eastern Ukraine.

The effort of Russia and Ukraine leaders to reach a real ceasefire between pro-Russian separatists and the Ukrainian military forces will serve not only the interest both countries, but to Europe as a whole, Steinmeier said in a press release on Wednesday.

The leaders of both countries bear the responsibility for maintaining the security of their peoples and the security of the entire European continent as well, he affirmed.

The minister warned of repercussions of the escalation of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, noting that this escalation concerns the lives of people in eastern Ukraine, the unity of Ukraine and the security of Europe.

Commenting on reported ceasefire reached earlier today by the two sides, he said it was a sign of hope which will be good if it was translated into action on the ground in the coming days.
