(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Prime Minister and Interior Minister, H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, yesterday morning met with officials of the organising committee currently preparing for the 2015 World Handball Championships to be held in Doha next January.
The detailed discussions centered around Doha's preparation for the mega event in which the world's top 24 countries will take part from January 15 to February 1, 2015.
Yesterday's meeting was attended by H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the tournament, Ahmed Al Shaebi, vice president of the organising committee, and Dr Thani Abdulrehman Al Kuwari, Director-General of the Championship.
Other top officials at the meeting included Mohammed Jaber Al Mulla, Salah Al Saadi, Nasser Al Sulaiti, Abdullah Al Hajri, Sheikha Al Thani, Fahad Al Yafei and Abdullahi Yusuf Mulla.
H E Sheikh Joaan welcomed the Prime Minister and Interior Minister with a key-note speech at the start of the discussions. H E Sheikh Joan said Doha will remain committed to delivering a memorable world championship.
Dr Thani Al Kuwari later presented a comprehensive report on the scale of projects that have been completed or nearing completion.
Dr Al Kuwari thanked Sheikh Joan for his leadership and continuous support ever since Doha won the bid to stage the championship.
Dr Al Kuwari also detailed various aspects of the organizing committee handling every facet of the event that will held in January next year.
Twenty-four teams will participate in the final tournament - Qatar, as hosts, and Spain, as world champions.
The draw for the championship were held in late July in Doha.
"We are close to building three new venues. This means handball fans from all over the world won't have any travel woes," Dr Al Kuwari said at the draw that were attended by coaches, officials and players of the participating teams.
"When we had bid for the World Championship, we had promised that all venues would be built in one city. We are about to complete all three venues soon," Dr Thani said.
"The fans can easily watch the games without having to worry about travelling from one city to another," he said.
"That's why we feel this will be a unique World Championship."
"We have been in constant dialogue with the IHF since we began our preparations for the World Championship," Dr Thani explained.
"We will make sure every effort is made to make this event the greatest-ever World Championship," he said. "We are thrilled that the 2015 World Championships will be an important milestone in the development of the game," Dr Thani said. "This edition of the World Championship will leave a lasting legacy for generations to follow," Dr Thani added. "A legacy not just for our people but for all handball fans in the region."
