(MENAFN- QNA) Mexico plans to build a new airport in Mexico City with a capacity for 120 million passengers per year by 2018, President Enrique Pena Nieto said Tuesday.
This is set to be "the country's largest infrastructure project in recent years, and one of the largest in the world," Pena Nieto said in his state of the union address.
The plan will mean increasing four-fold the current capacity of Mexico City's Benito Juarez airport, adding four more runways to the current two and building a new terminal.
The airport's expansion would reportedly cost around 120 billion pesos (over 9 billion dollars).
"The current (airport) saturation restricts communication between the country's states, limits Mexico's connection with the world, puts a brake on trade and investment and generates delays for users," Pena Nieto said.
