(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The Human League bring their electro-pop back catalogue to Dubai New wave legends The Human League will bathe The Irish Village in synths for their show on Thursday September 25.

The group formed 37 years ago in Sheffield England - quickly creating a stir in the British music scene with their electronic sound.

David Bowie professed himself a fan calling the group “the future of pop music” although The S*x Pistols’ John Lydon was less effusive labelling them “trendy hippies”.

With Philip Oakey on vocals the band signed to Virgin Records and released their debut album Reproduction in 1979 which proved a commercial disappointment when it only snuck into the UK top 40.

The band’s second album Travelogue reached number 16 but again failed to meet expectations.

Oakey who wanted to pursue a more commercial sound fell out with his bandmates Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh - who both ended up leaving the group to form Heaven 17 (best-known for their 1983 hit Temptation).

Teenagers Susan Ann Sulley and Joanne Catherall joined the new Human League reportedly after Oakey and his girlfriend met them dancing in a nightclub and in 1981 the poppier outfit struck chart gold.

The band’s album Dare produced the UK and US number one Don’t You Want Me as well as reaching the top spot in their homeland and spawning two more top 10 singles in Love Action (I Believe in Love) and Open Your Heart.

The Human League continued repaying Virgin Records’ faith during the 1980s releasing a string of hits such as Being Boiled Mirror Man (Keep Feeling) Fascination and Human.

Though fading somewhat in the following decade the band enjoyed a mid-’90s resurgence with their album Octopus (1995) thanks to its infectious lead single Tell Me When.

Don’t You Want Me has proven the group’s most enduring hit also reaching the UK top 20 in 1995 and in 2014 after a campaign by Scottish football club Aberdeen FC.

They also continue to release new music most recently with 2011’s Credo their ninth studio album while acts who have cited The Human League’s influence include Moby Lady Gaga Pet Shop Boys and Madonna.

Tickets to the group’s Irish Village show cost Dhs160 from www.timeouttickets.comand the venue. Doors open at 7pm for a 9pm start. adamkhaleejtimes.com
