Japan Confirms 12 New Cases of Dengue Fever

(MENAFN- QNA) Japan's health ministry says it has confirmed 12 more domestic cases of dengue fever, bringing the total number of infected people in the domestic outbreak to 34.

Ministry officials said on Tuesday that the 12 new cases were reported in Tokyo, Osaka, Aomori, and Yamanashi.

Health authorities reported the first case of domestic infection in 70 years on Wednesday and the number of victims continued to grow ever since, according to Japan's NHK World website.

Officials say none of those infected have shown serious symptoms and their conditions remain stable.

Authorities say all 34 victims had visited Yoyogi Park in central Tokyo, or its vicinity, in August. Apparently none of them had traveled abroad in the past month.

The ministry is advising people to swiftly seek medical attention if they develop a fever or other symptoms after being bitten by mosquitoes in or around Yoyogi Park.

Dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes and not directly from person to person. Outbreaks are common in tropical and subtropical areas of Asia and Latin America.

Most people recover in about one week, but in rare cases the disease can be fatal.
