Jordan PM, ICRC President Discuss Palestinian Issues

(MENAFN- QNA) Jordan Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour met with President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer and the accompanying delegation.

During the meeting they discussed latest developments in the region, especially the Palestinian issue and the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, Jordan news agency (Petra) reported.

Ensour voiced Jordan's gratefulness and appreciation for the assistance provided by the ICRC to the Kingdom and the region as well as for the targeted sections of the society, mainly the Syrian refugees.

He said that the cost borne by Jordan as a result of hosting Syrian refugees stands at JD 3 billion, pointing to the pressure they place on sectors such as water, education, health and services in host communities. "The Syrian refugees’ presence also exacerbated the water problem in Jordan," Ensour said.

Jordan, the prime minister added, is continuing to play its role towards the refugees, noting that the international community did not fulfil its role recently and failed to help the Kingdom to bear the cost of hosting the refugees.

The president of the ICRC expressed appreciation for Jordan's efforts to host Syrian refugees, adding that the ICRC increased the aid it provides to Jordan to $30 million during the last six months.
