Dubai set to stage Gary Barlow show in October

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Why the news of one pop concert in Dubai has wider (and happier) implications according to Adam Zacharias And so it begins.

Earlier this week on my drive to work I heard on the radio that Gary Barlow was headed to Dubai. The Take That singer will perform a solo show at Media City Amphitheatre in October for all you pop fans out there.

The announcement arched my eyebrows not just as a fan (admit it Patience and Back for Good are cracking tunes) but also for its symbolic importance.

For the UAE’s bustling entertainment scene summer is a predictably low-key affair. The temperature soars up and the number of residents and visitors drops hence there’s less to do.

But while summer is a time to chill autumn conversely is when everything begins to heat up again.

For the past six years in this exact late August/early September timeframe one big announcement always drops – be it a celebrity visit to The Dubai Mall to endorse a perfume or a Yas Island stadium show.

It’s a little like Groundhog Day in the States (the day not the movie). On February 2 every year a little marmot pops its head out of its burrow and decides whether winter will continue for the next six weeks or if spring will come early.

The Gary Barlow news is our own personal Groundhog Day here in the UAE – because once one major event is unveiled a plethora of others will quickly follow as promoters vie for the attention of both the media and the public.

And so we begin to tiptoe away from the leisurely summertime and into ‘silly season’ – which ostensibly will begin with Lady Gaga’s Dubai concert next month. (Although this doesn’t technically count as a ‘UAE Groundhog Day’ moment as the show was announced back in May. Adam: one Pedants: nil).

As a talking toaster once said while it was being built I’ll end with a plug. Keep your eyes glued to these pages to see which superstar is headed here next. And don’t you worry we guarantee plenty are on their way…
