EU warns Ukraine crisis could reach point of no return

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A few hours ahead of a special meeting of EU leaders to discuss the Ukraine crisis later on Saturday, the President of the European Commission, Jose Manuel Barroso, warned that further escalation in the Ukraine conflict could reach a "point of no-return".

"We have discussed the latest developments in the security and the humanitarian situation in Eastern Ukraine which have further increased our concern. This afternoon, the European Council (EU summit) will also address these developments," he told reporters after a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

Barroso said that in the past few days, the situation has worsened considerably.

"The opening of new fronts and the use of Russian regular forces is not acceptable and represents a grave transgression." he said.

"We are in a very serious dramatic situation. We may see a situation where we reach the point of no-return. If the escalation of the conflict continues, this point of no-return can come. I believe it is not yet too late to find a political solution," he added.

On his part, Poroshenko said the situation has worsened since August 27. "Thousands of foreign troops and hundreds of foreign tanks are now on the territory of Ukraine, with a very high risk not only for the peace and stability of Ukraine, but for the whole peace and stability in Europe," he warned.

It is very important for Ukraine that today the Ukrainian President is invited to take part in the EU Council meeting to debrief the EU leaders about the current situation, added Poroshenko.
