(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning (MOMUP) is looking forward to developing a number of housing complexes to accommodate nearly 28,000 workers, local Arabic daily Al Arab reported yesterday quoting a source at the Ministry.
These residential facilities will be consisting of seven complexes, each with the capacity to house about 4,000 low-income workers.
In addition to these housing facilities, there will be a separate complex that will house basic service providers and facilities, including services of the Ministry of Interior such as police, immigration and traffic.
According to the source, the Ministry (MOMUP) is set to float tenders inviting local contracting companies to design, build and operate these complexes.
The complex will also have entertainment and social centres which will qualify it to be called a complete labour city satisfying all international standards with contemporary services.
The project, after its completion, will also help move a lot of single workers who are currently living in family residential areas. Once they move in these facilities, additional residential units will be available for rent to the families who are currently striving to find affordable housing units.
"With the influx of foreign workers and increasing pressure on the limited resources, we need to build more of such facilities and residential complexes to support the ever growing population," Ahmad Jassim Al Jolo, Chairman of Qatar Society of Engineers, was quoted by the daily as saying.
He said that housing societies should be built on the outskirts of Doha and its suburbs having all the necessary facilities such as shopping complexes providing all the needful services to the people living in the neighbourhood. Since people living in those areas will not have to travel to Doha for every big or small things, there will be much ease of pressure on the resources and facilities in Doha such as roads, shopping centres and other.
