(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) The Special Economic Zone at Duqm is witnessing implementation of many tourism projects that strengthen the potentials of the zone to attract tourists and investors. 

Estimates indicate that the cost of these projects exceeded RO300mn.

The Special Economic Zone Authority at Duqm (SEZAD) has prepared the 25sq km tourist area by providing it with the all facilities of electricity and water roads and communications. The tourist area has 19km-length marine front.

The area has now several hotels and tourist rest houses including the four star Crowne Plaza Hotel and three star City Hotel. Both hotels are owned by Omran. Mohammed al Barwani Group is behind the Park Inn Hotel which includes a range of chalets suites and restaurants and is expected to open soon.

Al Madinah Real Estate Company is building a tourist project which includes a shopping centre hotel apartments residential complex and golf course at a cost of RO70mn. The project will be implemented in four stages.

The city of Duqm Front is considered one of the most prominent housing projects in the zone. The first stage was recently inaugurated. The project is established by Duqm Development Company (DDC) fully stateowned company. The first stage is composed of the 344 luxurious housing units playgrounds gyms and various facilities. The company is currently implementing the second stage which will be completed in 2017 and includes residential units commercial centre sports facilities and entertainments at a cost of RO60mn.

Renaissance Services Group is building and developing the housing project which consists of residential housing units for 10000 people at a cost of RO38mn which will be ready in 2015.

A study conducted by SEZAD predicted that the zone will need five to eight hotels over the next 20 years. Another study conducted by Duqm Port Company (DPC) predicted that the zone will attract cruise ships particularly businessmen tourism recreational and environmental tourism.

SEZAD is working within the framework of its interest in the tourism sector to complete the construction and operation of the dock for cruise ships and marine ships as part of the government's dock at Duqm Port which will be completed in 2016.

The Rock Garden is one of the major geological sites that SEZAD is developing for tourist purposes as the garden is considered as an archaeological site that contains various rare rocks
