Hollande: Europe will Increase Sanctions Against Russia

French President Francois Hollande said sanctions against Russia will be increased at the European Council's meeting in Brussels this evening.

Hollande, who made his remarks at a meeting of centre-left prime ministers in the Elysee Palace in Paris, said the European Council would increase the level of sanctions.

European Union leaders will gather in Brussels later today to provide additional assistance to Ukraine and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko is expected to meet with the European leaders in Brussels to brief them on the current situation.

Further European sanctions are aimed to mount pressure on Russia to change what they regard as a Russian intervention in Ukraine.

The conflict raging in eastern Ukraine has killed nearly 2,600 people, the United Nations said Friday, voicing concern about atrocities committed by armed groups and the increasing involvement of foreign fighters.
