Lebanese Army Arrests 3 Suspects in Arsal

The Lebanese Army said Friday that it arrested a Lebanese citizen and two Syrians for their suspected involvement in the deadly gunbattles earlier this month in the northeastern border town of Arsal.

In a statement, the Army identified the detainees as Mohammad Deeb Karnabi, a Lebanese, and Syrian nationals Mohammad Abdul-Sattar Akouk and Abdulla Mohammad Akouk.

Karnabi was driving a pickup truck with no papers when he was stopped at a Lebanese Army checkpoint near Arsal’s infirmary at 8:30 pm Thursday, the statement was quoted by Lebanese newspaper 'The Daily Star' as saying.

It said a handgun and ammunition belonging to it were seized from the Hyundai pickup truck.

The two Syrians in Karnabi’s company were also arrested in connection with the five-day clashes in Arsal between Islamist militants and the Lebanese Army earlier in August, the Army said.

It said the suspects were handed over to the relevant authorities.
