Hyderabad cleric freed on bail

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Gujarat High Court on Thursday granted conditional bail to Hyderabad cleric Maulana Mohammed Abdul Qavi who was arrested in connection with the 2003 ISI conspiracy case and lodged in the high-security central jail in Ahmedabad. The court ordered release of the maulvi accused by the Gujarat police of plotting to avenge the 2002 communal riots after he furnished a bond of Rs 50000 agreed to surrender his passport and promised to appear before the office of the Ahmedabad city crime branch police once a month.

Qavi who was arrested in Delhi in April and slapped with terror-related charges had moved the HC after a special court under the Prevention of Terrorism Activities Act (POTA) last month rejected his plea saying he had remained absconding for more than 11 years and because he was facing serious charges of terrorism.

Qavi’s counsel M A Saiyed told the court that the cleric was never absconding during all these years but the Gujarat police never took efforts to approach him.

He also said that his client was being made a scapegoat and there was no evidence against him that could establish that he was anyway involved in the alleged conspiracy to spread terror in order to avenge the Hindu-Muslim clashes in which the minority community was at the receiving end.
