30 Killed in Sinking Boat in Nigeria


Thirty people, mostly traders, lost their lives Thursday when the boat they were travelling in from Budon to Jamata capsized in the middle of River Niger.

Eyewitnesses informed Nigerian newspaper THISDAY that the accident occurred at midnight when the engine of the speed boat developed a fault right at the middle of the river leading to the boat breaking into pieces and in the process, most of the traders drowned in the river.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager Corporate Affairs, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Tayo Fadile, said there was a reported case of boat mishap which occurred between Jamata and Budon, stressing "while awaiting a detailed report from our staff dispatched to the scene, preliminary enquiry revealed that the boat was sailing at night and was heading towards Lokoja.
