UNSC strongly condemns downing of UNMISS helicopter in S. Sudan

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Security Council late Wednesday "condemned in the strongest terms" the downing yesterday, near Bentiu, Unity State (South Sudan) of an UNMISS MI-8AMT helicopter performing a cargo flight to the area with four Russian crew members, three of whom were killed and one severely injured.

In a press statement, the Council President, UK, said the Council stressed that this attack constituted a "grave violation" of the Status of Forces Agreement of 8 August 2011 and jeopardized the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) operations, and "strongly urged" UNMISS and Juba to conduct a "swift, thorough and transparent" investigation of the crash.

The Council "strongly emphasized" that those responsible for the crash must be held accountable and all necessary measures must be taken to avoid such crashes in the future. It also requested that UNMISS take additional measures, as appropriate, to ensure the security of its air operations in South Sudan.
